My grandmother worked at the Steam Packet Inn on the 1891 census. She and her family lived at Elvins Yard, Hook. Then later they lived at Bugges Yard in Goole. Looking for any information or relatives of Samuel Weightman. He was Superintendent of Police for the West Riding Police force until approximately 1910 or 1911. His wife was Sarah (formerly Johnson) and they had 12 children. Sarah passed away in Feb. 1937 in the village of Easthorpe.

Mr grandfather was born in Goole and served with the 4th (Goole) battalion in the First World War. My father Leonard Harness was born in Rawcliffe in 1908, and I still have relatives in Goole. If there is anyone who has any interest in the 4th batt please get in touch.

I am seeking any information about my Great Grandfather William Shaw. The only information I have is that he was born in Castleford, YKS was married to Annie (maiden name unkown) and had five sons and three daughters between 1891 and 1912. According to family sources William ran a barge called the Joseph and Ellen between Goole and Leeds carrying flour. He died in 1918 during the influenza epidemic and the barge was sold to the Aire and Calder navigation Company. I don't think the family lived in Goole as the children were born in Gode, Barnsley and Leeds, however I have been told that they resided on the barge sometimes and were all on board during the 1901 census when the barge was in drypool Hull.

i'm trying to find out what happened to my grandad, ERNEST JOHNSON - he's believed to have drowned in hull docks, around 1932.
he was carrying quite a large amount of money, to purchase something from a ship for his business, johnson and wright. my mum always thought he'd been murdered, as all that was found was his bike, but it's more likely he drowned.
ernest was born on november 16th, married his wife, alice robinson in september 1923 and lived at 10, landsdowne road in goole,with his 3 children, marie (my mum), betty and peter and apparently, was a well known person around the town.

if anyone remembers ERNEST JOHNSON or can advice me where to look next, i'd love to hear from them.
my aunt betty is the only relative left and she really wants to know what happened to him (if anything did) before she passes away.

Ref Joseph Jackson b 1823 d. 1901 buried in Goole cemetary. I am pretty sure that I have a Joseph Jackson in my tree but I am pretty new to geneaology so not sure if we are talking about the same one. If it is the same one I have a Moses Jackson who was also a mariner.

My great grandparents Timothy Box and Ann Ellis Box were married on 24 Dec 1846 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church Chapel, Goole, Parish of Hook. Timothy was a resident of Cowick and Ann a resident of Pollington. They resided in Pollington with Ann's father, Samuel Ellis, until they emigrated to Sodus, Wayne County, NY in 1872.

I have just started researching my mothers family history and have traced her gr gr gr grandfather back to John Riley born abbt1760 in Rawcliffe. I am in the process of tracing my family tree. My father was born in Goole in 1922 - his name is Arthur Charles Garnham he lived with his parents until approx 1944, left left Goole and came down to London. He was deaf and so I expect that he would have gone to a deaf school so if anyone remembers him it maybe because he was deaf.
He lived with his parents Arthur Robert & Rose Ann Garnham - nee Kelly and their address was 41 Queens Avenue Goole. Arthur Robert - my grandfather died in 1937 aged 45 and his occupation was farm worker. Rose remarried George E Smith in 1944 and she died in August 1958. I think they had a son in 1927 called Alec Garnham who died at the age of 6 in 1933.

I had two great uncle's who were in the 1/4th goole territorials kings own yorkshire light infantry in the first world war but were transferred to the 9th battalion just before the battle of the somme, one was killed sept 16th 1916,his brother survived.They also had a brother in the 2/5th who was killed on the somme in may 1917 and another killed in salonica (GREECE) with the machine gun corps on sept 15th 1916,My great grandma had lost three sons within 6 months.I have visited all the cemetrys of all the brothers.There was over a hundred goole men killed serving with the koyli during ww1.

I am trying to trace the family of my gtgrandfather and the only info I have about him is that his name is John Palmer and he was born about 1835 in Goole and his father was named William. I have found him in Guernsey in 1861 married to Julianna LeMaitre and he had a few of his children there and then moved to France where other children were born. His wife went on to marry a couple of times after John's death - and unfortunately have no details of that except that he died when his ship was wrecked in a storm - place unknown. Have been trying to find details of his family in Yorkshire for about 5 years with no luck.

KONARSKI Family - Rawcliffe area.
I am researching my f.tree and desperate for some help! I am not sure if I have the correct Rawcliffe. The family I am trying to trace - John/ Jan KONARSKI born:1811 est -Warsaw, Poland he later went on to live in Clowne (1851 census) and he was a Pedlar/ Hawker. He had two daughters - Louisa (later Skinner) born: 1845 est-Petersfield, Hampshire and Mary Ann KONARSKI born:1847 est-Rawcliffe, Yorkshire. I am unable to find any information on the girls mother. Their father is listed as a Widower on the 1851 census.

I am seeking information about my Great Grandmother, Caroline Maude Pearson. I believe she may have been born in 1864 in Goole Yorkshire. Caroline may have moved to Nottingham as an adult. She was married twice. First to a Scott (she had two boys - one was my uncle Tom Scott). Then she married my Greatgrandfather Edward (Teddy) Lowe (who was a Barnardo boy). They had two daughters (Ivy Lowe, who was born in England and my Grandmother Grace Lowe- born 1920 in Strathroy Ontario Canada). They moved to Canada at some point. However, My G.Grandfather Lowe went to Britian and fought in the First World War for England.

I believe Caroline had several siblings. On one website I found a Pearson family from Goole who had a daughter Caroline and serveral other childern

Hi - I'm looking for information regarding the Morris family.

My grandad and nanna - Charles and Dorothy - lived in Goole for as far as I am aware nearly all their lives. They had two daughters, Carol and Pam who both still live in the town.

Reply to Barbara Dixon. I may have the George Hall c1858 you are looking for. His father George c1831 was born in Wisbeach Cambs.Young George ended his life at 1 Montague St. His son Ted c1890 married my wife's grandmother. His son John Richard c1894 went down with the Rye. All were mariners. I believe George was married at Pontefract in 1880. I have not yet confirmed this or who he married. On his headstone in Hook cemetery it states a Louisa Hall, is within (could be his daughter) a shipmate by the name of Middleton and an infant. He held the record at one time of being the oldest person to have lived in Goole. His full name was George William Bowman Hall. I have much more info on this family if you want to contact me.

I must congratulate you on an excellent website. I located it late last night and ultimately was very late going to bed. It was like stepping back in time. I was born in Cross Stanley St. in 1934 but left Goole in1956. I now live near Southampton. From reading the stories I realised I knew quite a lot of these people. My father was a coal trimmer until in later life he worked for Bennets as a checker. After my retirement I became involved in family history. On my wifes side are the Morris and Hall familys. On my side the Sutcliffes and Dickinsons. In fact I have been trying for some time to locate a member of the later. In my very large collection of photos. there are three of a young girl with my sisters Gina or Jeana Dickinson. I would guess she was born around 1930. Her Grandmother must have been Georgina Dickinson(nee Bunting) My grandfathers youngest sister.In 1901 the Dickinsons lived in Edinburgh St. I would like to know what became of the little girl. She may be still around.Cheers.

In 1951 I got stranded in Entebbe [Uganda] and had to stay there for a fortnight at the Lake Victoria Hotel.
I was on my way from Johannesburg to Amsterdam. The idea was that I stayed one night in Entebbe and then continue the flight the next day.
The carrier, Tropic Airways, had only one aircraft, a Dakota.
The hotel management made the mistake by putting me in the wrong room, so that the next day the plane left without me and I had to wait for fourteen days for the return flight from Johannesburg.
Because I didn't have a visa for Uganda, I was not allowed to
explore the country on my own. So I passed my time by playing lots of snooker in the hotel!
Peter Oads, a native from Goole, was at that time head of the Colonial Police in Entebbe. Because he felt sorry for me, he drove me around in his police car to Kampala and some other places of interest, which I appreciated very much.
I wonder if you could tell me what has become of Mr Oads?

I don't think I can claim to have an ancestor BORN in Goole but have recently discovered that my ggrandmother Mary Allen married my ggrandfather Charles Pemberton 22 April 1838. Her father (my gggrandfather) was listed on the 1841 census as a waterman, living on his barge with his wife and children (minus gggranny!) In 1861 he is listed as the master of the Atlas, a coal barge in Eccleshall Bierlow, he seems to have got around. His decendants, too, have got around... South Africa and Australia!

I am researching Tom Harniess who was the founder of the family who travelled fairs around the Goole/Doncaster area and still have relatives in the area connected with the business. Tom Harniess died at his home at 78 Marshfield Road, Hook on 17th September 1911 and is buried in the cemetery on Hook Road. I am a decendant of Thomas Duckels who owned a brewery in Goole in the late 1700's. He had a son named William, but he was born in 1805. He came to the U.S.A. in the 1830's. His son, Edward George, was my great grandfather.

As an expat I read and see on TV the chaos caused by rising waters in Goole and the surrounding areas.Having travelled the same road down here in Essex I can fully understand the situation and trust that the situation improves before too long.

My G G Grandfather, GEORGE JACKSON, was born in Mirfield, W
Yorkshire in 1812, and married ANN (NANCY) RICHARDSON. His
children were ALLAN, HANNAH, ALFRED, GEORGE, MARY, JOHN
and SAM. His Father was SAMUEL JACKSON, but not sure which
one.
He came to Goole about 1840 to represent the firm of
Jackson & Sons, who were canal carriers, tug owners and salt
merchants, and later went on to form The Goole and Hull Steam
Towing Company Limited.
He died in June 1888.

Another G G Grandfather was ABRAHAM SUTCLIFF, who came to
Goole from Leeds about 1840 to open a brickyard for the A.C.N.
Later he became the licencee of the Sydney Tap in George St.
and then the Crown Inn in Ouse St. He married Sarah Ann. His
children were John, Tom, and Joseph.
His son, JOHN SUTCLIFF, my G Grandfather, took over the
Crown Inn after his Father died. He married ANNIE ELIZABETH.
His children were Francis Edward, John, Maria, Abraham and
Adelaide.

She married a fried fish dealer from Old Goole, Together they ran this shop. They either had this shop in 1897.

I have a Jane Chappell in my tree born in Hensall 1824 she married my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather William England in 1847 - they lived in Castleford and her descendants eventually ended up in Goole where their gr gr granddaughter Gwendoline England married Ernest Auty.

To David Lea-Jackson: I suspect we are related somehow but I can't quite get all the links in place. My working document is an e-mail from my uncle who died two years ago. He got me started on this ancestry hunt and gave me lots of names but no dates. Some of the names are not quite right but he gave me 'Stephen Lea m Honnor Acaster' and I have written in my notes that I found their marriage cert on microfische in Goole library..
4.10.1915 married with Tom Acaster and JOSEPH LEA ( 24 Weatherill Street) as witnesses. He also has George Lea m. Mary Acaster - again no year.
My details are; Elizabeth Acaster m (21.12.1857) John Clay. Their daughter Honour Clay is my great-grandmother. Elizabeth Acaster had a sister Honour who married Joshua Watson and a brother Tom (b.1858 d.17.9.38) who married Sarah Harrison. They had 6 children one of whom was HONOUR ACASTER who married STEPHEN LEA.Therefore Honour Acaster is first cousin to my greatgrandmother Honour Clay. She lived in the docks area of Goole inc The Half Moon Inn. Hope you have more info on the Acasters!

Whilst trawling through my shoeboxes of family photos A young girl keeps appearing usually in the company of my two sisters. Sometimes called Jeana, Gina or ina Dickinson.I think she is the daughter of John or George Dickinson both being the product of the marriage between John Dickinson, mariner to Georgina Bunting,my grandaunt. The marriage took place in Goole in 1891. They lived in Edinburgh St in the 1901 census I would guess the girl was born around 1930. Which means she may well be still around. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Trying to find anything out about my Dad, Brian Ward, who was an evacuee during the war. He was placed at a Mr and Mrs Youle, who brought him up after his mum was killed in the Hull bombings.

My family history has traced back to John Duckles born 1798 who married a Jemima Clark born 1802. One of their children John Clark Duckels born 1830 married Annie Strickland and farmed in the area. Of their children Thomas William Duckels was my great grandfather and moved to Leeds. His brother farmed in the Gowdall area. Does anyone have any information on them? Re CRAWSHAW My father was born in HowdenJan 1918 .His father James Kitwood Crawshaw andmum Jessie , who later married a Walter Fletcher after J.K.'s death, thought to be a very premature death due to the effects of 'gas' during W.W.1
HOWEVER as both Jessie and James lied about their resp. ages to marry in Rotherhamin 1917 and said they were both age 21, when in fact James could only have been 17or18, it's not clear whether or not James actually served in the war. Stan always believed his father was a police officer but I'm not too sure about that, James K. must have been a very young Officer and it just doesn't ring true.I'm trying to access records of local cemetaries to see if J.K> was buried in ,or near Howden .
If anyone can offer any help or advice I will be most grateful.

I dont know if you are still interested in finding info on the Taskers? I did a look up for you today and found the family at 30 Cecil St (as you said) on the 1901 census. There was Alfred Tasker Head age 32, wife Louisa age 31 and children George E age 4 and Louisa M age 1. Sarah Ann and the others must have been born after this census. Alfred's Occupation was Mariner- Seas. I found the family in 1881 and Alfred J. was a Scholar age 12, with his mother Sarah Ann Tasker who was a widow. She was a Boarding House Keeper at Edinburgh St Goole, she was aged 47, born at Hull. Alfred had brothers, William H aged 22 who was a Railway Clerk born Castleford.Hebert M aged 19 , a Sailmaker born Castleford. Edward Tasker aged 15, a Railway Clerk born Leeds.
Previous to that I found the family at Junction Lock, Barnsley on the 1871 census. The Head of the household was John G Tasker aged 44 Collector of Tolls for Canal Company, born at Goole. Wife Sarah A aged 37 born Hull. Sons Wm 12 and Herbt M 9, both born Castleford and young Alfred age 2, born at Leeds.
I discovered that John was John Grisdale Tasker, born at Goole 16 feb 1827 Died 11 oct 1876, according to a member of the Family Search site.

I'm sure I could take the family further back if you would be interested.

looking for any information on my father Joseph Jackson I believe he had two older sisters Grace and Beatrice and his mothers name was Caroline. He was stationed in Norfolk in 1916 and married my mother Rose Goodbody. I believe he had uncles living in Hull who may have been trawler owners. When he married my mother all contact with his family in Leeds was lost. I also think his father died and his mother remarried.

William KENNEDY lived in Goole shortly after WW1. He was a stoker on the HMS Rifleman. He married Mary GILCHRIST in 1918 and they had five children. He transferred to a Merchant shipping company as a fireman after the war. Around 1925, he left home and was never seen or heard of again. Leaving his family destitute, Mary took in a lodger called GIBBONS. They had five children before Gibbons died in 1932 of a heart attack, just prior to the birth of his fifth child. His previous childrens' birth certificates bear the fathers' name as William KENNEDY!
Any information, suggestions, etc. regarding William Kennedy is sought following many years of searching. Thank you in anticipation.

But you may help me as you know the family well.An incident took place many years ago at Wezzaks(West field banks) where a group of boys were skinny dipping,just after slack water when the tide was on the turn.We were taking turns to jump off the branch into the shallows. When one boy decided to dive in.Resulting in him drowning by getting his head stuck in the mud. He was a Kennedy. If had lived he would be about 75 now. Do you know of this?

I made a mistake Mary Smart worked at Saltmarsh Hall not in the 1900's, but in the 1800's. Estimated date would be
sometime around 1860, 1865. She married Henry Wood and lived in Goole on Carter Street next to one of her daughters Charlotte Day.

Norma, Have you looked in the Census Records. The 1861 records only 15 Mary Smarts in yorkshire. The www.ancestry.co.uk site has I believe a free 2 week offer available at present which allows you to look at transcribed details from the original census and also the actual census pages.

I am trying to trace some of my family, my mothers father was George Albert Mant, I believe there were 9 siblings, Dick, John, Jo (Jo was a lorry driver and was killed on Garrowby Hill), Mary, Charlotte and Anna but we can't remember the rest. My grandfathers father was Albert Mant and he married Mary (surname unknown) and her family were barge people from the Goole area. We think my grandfather was born in Goole, it is also believe that my gg grandmother had 3 families, she lost 2 lots of children one lot by drowning and one by fire.

Mary Mant married a man named Thacker and we think had a son called Ian there may also have been a daughter. My mum had a cousin called Stanley Mant who drowned in Hull docks.

I believe my gr grandma used to be a dance teacher and held her classes in Pheonix street from family it was said she clled herself Madame Addy.The Knox family were mostly master mariners in the late 1800 and sailed on ships such as ONWARD,SWALLOW,BRACKENHOLME, MICZER, AND JANE KNOX.

Hi. I'm researching the family tree of the Haldenbys, who originated just accross the country border in Yorkshire. All that remains of the village of Haldenby now is a farm and nearby hall - it didn't survive the 16th C. I'm wondering if anyone can prove a possible link between a Roger Haldenby who was in Adlingfleet with wife Ann and son Robert at the beginning of the 17th C, and a William Haldenby with wife Elizabeth who was there at the end of that century.

These houses were at the side of the shipyard in Old Goole. You got to them one of two way first, cobbled alley way at the side of the Old Goole Working Man club on Swinefleet Rd or a second rd a little further, at the side of what used to be Moorhouses fish and chip shop which also lead onto Humber st. The houses John mentioned were called Dutch River side Villas or Terrace. There was another street next to that one unsure of its name but South St springs to mind. Duckles Building definately is where I said, spent most of my childhood days down there with my mates.

I have just found from the 1911 Census that my great grandmother Isabella Garrett lived at 76 Swinefleet Road with her two youngest children Leonora (then 12), my mother's mother, and Joyce. Her husband Henry Walter does not appear on the census form, although she is listed as 'wife' not 'widow' so maybe he was away at sea? Other older children (Beatrice Mary, Leith, Roy and Gwyneth) must have left home already. My mother would be very pleased with any information.

My Grand father JOSEPH MIDDLETON BORN AIRMYN 1853 was living in Hook at 3 Sherbourn Buildings in 1891, with his father JOSEPH BORN ABERFORD 1875, mother Hannah nee Wilson born 1855 brothers George and James, and sister Rose. He move out of the area and was at Blybourgh grange in 1901.

JAMES MIDDLETON appears to have remained in the area and is shown on the 1911 census as being at 21 Paradise Place, Goole with wife Ethel May, son James, and daughter Olive Rose. He was a coachman at a livery stables at this time. I cannot find reference to him between 1891 and 1911 for certain.

ROSE MIDDLETON also remained in Goole and does not seem to have married, but cannot be sure. In 1901 she was living with her father and mother at 45 Alexandra St., and in 1911 they are all at 19 Sotheron St.

My great, great, great grandfather was ROBERT MIDDLETON BORN 1825. He was living in Armin at 35 cottage in 1851 with wife Mary 1855, and daughters Mary Ann 1849, and Hannah 1851. In 1861 he is at 14 Doyle St. a border with Charles Wilson. In 1871 he is at 214 Inglebys Bld. All this time he is an agricultural labourer, but in 1880 he is obviously not so strong and is an indoor servant in Victoria St.

I have found out that William did not die in Goole, in fact I don't know where he died or is buried.
But I do know that he moved from Goole to Foston near York.
His wife Gertrude is buried in Hull, so it's possible that is where William is.
His wife was GERTRUDE EARLE of the Earles family in Hull. Her parents were the owners of Earles Cement works.

John Sutcliff 1846 (not the publican) married my great aunt Eliza Charlotte who lived in Castleford with John's family..Edward being the head a waterman from Hebden Bridge. When John brought his family to Goole. He fiirst of all had a letter "E" added to his surname for some reason. Which has made it difficult for me to trace relatives. He first set up home at 49 North St. Later moving to 12 Church St. His family comprised of John (who married Edith J Wilson. They had a daughter Also Edith J.) Edmond,Ada,Mabel,James,Bessie,Maud and Edith. I would like to know if John and Edith had a son? Also any other information about this family.

Hi, I'm tracing my ancestors and a lot of them came from Goole. My great grandfather Jerimiah Frederick Murphy (I think he used the name Frederick) was a keelman or mariner depending on what census/certificate you look at. In the 1901 census it lists him on board the barge named either William or Hull. Jerimiah and his wife Kate (nee Smart) had 3 sons - Frederick b1901, James Edward b1902 and Robert John b1904 - all born in Goole. By the time of the 1911 census the 3 boys were all resident at Newlands, Hull which I understand was a home for the orphans of sailors. Kate was a housekeeper, still in Goole and Jerimiah is nowhere to be found - presumably he had died but I cannot trace any record of his death. Please can anyone shed any light on this?
Also does anyone remember the Murphy's who lived at 10 Jefferson Street, Goole - Frederick, Ivy (nee Ward, and formerly married to Charles Lawson) and their children Muriel & Marion Lawson and Raymond & Sheila Murphy. Samuel Crump, born in Warwick in 1821, was a schoolmaster at Reedness in 1871, and "Assistant Overseer" at Reedness in 1881. He seems to have disappeared from the censuses after that. Does anyone know anything about him? What school was it (there doesn't seem to be a school in Reedness now), and what might he have been overseeing in 1881? Thanks

I read with interest about James K Crawshaw, this is my husbands Great Uncle...James K brother is the brother of Harold L Crawshaw..his grandfather...James K was born and bred in Crowle, Lincs, He did serve in the 1st world war I have managed to find his army records on ancestry...which states he was posted and discharged..he lied about his age when enlisted and states 19, when only 15, very young to serve....I have the crawshaw family tree on ancestry...we often visit crowle to lay flowers on his mum grave, but we have not found a grave for James K....if you are registered with ancestry you will be able to access all records related. My husbands mum Ivy Crawshaw is one of 13/14 children to Harold L Crawshaw who 2 years younger than James K...I hope this gives you more information about James K...Good Luck

Married to Hannah Mary nee Taylor (my grandmother's sister. Their parents being Waterway people Thomas the father born in Barnsley and Mary nee Jeff of Mexborough) Charley and Hanna's children were Charlotte Mary,Ernest and Charles Henry After Hannah Mary's death in1893. Charley moved to 12 Queen's Ave. My grandfather moving in to 65 Carlisle St. where my father was born in 1895. Charley remarried to a Kirton Lindsey girl Annie Elizabeth where in 1901 their family included Minnie and Harry. The latter was to become the "famous" Hook milkman with his horse "Trixie" Hope this may be of help

You mentioned your Grandmother as being sister to Hannah Mary, was she Elizabeth who later married a John Hunt? I know that Sarah married a Henry Joyner and they had a big family in Edinburgh street. I am puzzled why my grandmother Annie Elizabeth Joyner born in 1903 ended up in Barnardo's age 14 when she had such a large family in Goole.

Hello Maureen. The only info I have on the Taylor family is Thomas and Mary Jeff were married at Goole Parish church in 1850 They lived on board and Hannah Mary was born in Goole Dec. 1863. My grandmother Annie was born in Selby March 1871.Thomas bled to death in Goole docks when his leg became crushed between his vessel and the quayside in June1871. considering there was 8 yrs. between the girls ages I often wondered if they had siblings for I knew nothing of a Sarah. Annie Taylor married my grandfather James Arthur Bunting in 1891 from her home in Back North St. There is a Jean Bunting 1951 who married a John Hunt in1970 who still live in Goole. After the death of my Grand dad in 1906 a daugter was born Ena who later married a William Ash.Annie lived with "Tash" Spenceley their daughter Mary married Harry Dunwell . They had two children Margaret and Tommy. I hope you can follow all that and you may know some of the names I have mentioned. Good Luck

ELIZABETH Cawood/Caward/Coward was also known as ELIZABETH Young after her mother HANNAH CAWOOD 1834-1908 Rawcliffe remarried to JOHN YOUNG c1863 Rawcliffe.

They moved from Rawcliffe to Staddlethorpe, nr Gilberdyke. John was a manager at Staddlethorpe Flax Mill. They lived their lives out in same area. Children born at Staddlethorpe Dennis, Jane, John, Arthur, Fred, Isobel, Gertrude, Lucy, Sydney and Mabel.
Elizabeth and John are my Great Grandparents.

One of Elizabeth's earlier born child went with her to live at Staddlethorpe WALTER CAWOOD 1878-1951, he too was known as Walter Cawood/Coward/Caward/Young !!!
Does anyone know of the other children born to Elizabeth and left in Rawcliffe???.

Records state her Elizabeth's surname as Cawood/Coward/Caward but family surname is CAWOOD and is traced back to AMBROSE CAWOOD c1673 ASKHAM BRYAN, YORKS.

I really need info on Elizabeth and Hannah and their children. How did Elizabeth feed her earlier born children if she was not married? Where did the family live???
Her dau Isobel, my Nanna, always said her mother Elizabeth had 18 children with 2 sets of twins. To date we have found 11, some might have died in infancy - no deaths found ?? were the others working etc to be left in Rawcliffe after Elizabeth's move or did they live with relatives in Rawcliffe???

So many unanswered questions and no records as yet found to say these other children existed and/or died.

My Davis's were originally from Brotherton who both my great great granddad Thomas Davis and great great great Granddad Thomas Davis moved from with their families to Goole in the 1870's to work on the Docks and at sea. William born 1813. Richardson born1816 and Jabez born1818. All baptised at Eastrington..Richardson Wright my GGGrandfather,spent his life in Howden.Three years after the death of his wife Caroline Matilda Vause. He died in 1853. Leaving seven children. Goole Police - My greatgrandfather, Stephen SALMON was a Sgt at Goole from 1888 to 1901, I believe on the Docks. Am wondering if any one has any info/photos of the Police at Goole at this time?? I have managed to track down a few stories....The Case of the S.S. Gitana - The ship built by Napoleon Bonaparte for the Pope came to Goole with a Cargo of £300 worth of contraband where the gang were arrested - one member of the gang fled to Preston where my great grandfather arrested him. Then there was the Big Tea case! In this the crew of the SS Glannibanto had stolen about £126 pounds of tea and £75 worth of other goods over 9 months. The Police apprehended two of them, the third man escaped. After a "thrilling chase", my great grandad arrested the final man in London. There is also mention of an attempted murder at Old Goole. He recovered a revolver thrown into Earnshaws Clough. Does anyone know what or where is Earnshaws Clough or anything of an attempted murder in those days? and a gruesome tale of him recovering a mutilated and disfigured body from the stokehold of the SS J.M.Leonard wrecked in the Dutch River. I know he had a few incidents with horses....On 12th August 1897 two horses of Messrs Wilkinson and Heald's flour drays took fright at something in Victoria Street, bolted, knocked a lamp down and he stopped them opposite the Market Hall and on another occasion stopping runaway horses outside the Station hotel.
Does anyone have any further information on any of these stories?? I would love to hear about them and find out more about him and the stories. Many thanks.

Williams groom born in Aldershot D.O.B 1842, who married Olive Moody born in Goole D.O.B 1869 daughter of George Moody D.O.B 1829 brother of Mary Moody. George lived at 65, Albert St, Hooke, Goole in 1861 also Albert and Olive Lived at the same address.

Darren. Earnshaws Clough is a land drainage "stream" which flows under Swinefleet Road just outside Old Goole. The stream may have been associated with warping land before becoming used for only drainage. There is another warping drain at the outskirts of Swinefleet known as Swinefleet Clough. Lots of the farm land in the area was produced, after digging out peat, by feeding river water rich in mud into the diggings. The mud settled out of the water and very slowly as the level built up it became land which could be cultivated. When the "streams" were no longer needed for warping the inflow from the river was stopped and they reverted to drainage only use.

I have driven past it many a time without realising its name or thinking too much about it. Now when driving over, it will have a whole new meaning and is great to put the name on the map where I know my great grandfather recovered a revolver. Cheers and all the best, Darren

Harold James or James Harold Green born Goole between 1898 and 1903 parents Frederick and Beatrice Green, Frederick was a Vessel Pilot at the time of Harold/James birth in Goole.Harold /James stowed away in a ship age about 12 and went to Australia

Harold /James joined the Army in Australia in 1916 and gave his next of Kin as Mrs. Annie Collins 6 Cecil street Goole.

It has since been discovered that Harold/James Green was in fact born as Harold Retberg in Goole. Harold's father was listed in the 1901 census as Fred Retburg Master Mariner living at 49 Carter Street Airmyn Goole.
Harold's sister in 1916 was Annie Collier 6 Cecil Street she then moved to Marshfield Avenue.
Annie and John Collier had at least 3 children in Goole
1912 Beatrice E Reberg Collier
1919 Reins Retberg Collier
1921 Mary Retberg Collier

I am trying to trace something of my Grandfather who was a sea captain and died in Belgium but was brought home for burial and apparently the whole town turned out. But do not know when or his age at death.

I am trying to find members of the Hodgson family who were born in Goole. They are the children of my grandmother's sister. Does anyone know of a Jack born 1907, Emily 1905, Mabel 1910 and Edith born 1904. I think that Edith may have married Thomas C Butler in 1928. Any help much appreciated. BUTTLE family...I am seeking information about the family of Thomas Alfred Buttle born George St. Goole 1854. He died in 1929 at Clifton Gardens Goole, I believe he was a steamship manager and previously a shipping agent. I am particularly keen to receive information regarding one of his sons, my Grandfather,
namely Arthur Edwin Buttle born 1881 who seved in Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry during W.W.1. Arthur Edwin married and had family in Llanelli South Wales, where my father, another Thomas Alfred Buttle was born. The last record I can find of Arthur Edwin Buttle is in Llanelli in 1922. I cannot find his death recorded anywhere; does anyone know what became of him. Any information about this family would be gratefully received.

I am trying to trace my family - the Hearns's and the jacksons.

My great grandmother was Ada Ann Hearn and she was born in 1887 in Airmyn. Her father was John and his wife was also Ada Ann. As of the 1891 census they lived in Milton Street, Hook. John Hearn was a Railway Horse Shunter, he was actually born in Spaldington, so not sure at what age they arrived in Goole.

My great grandmother married Claude Jackson, his father was Robert Jackson and all the men and boys worked at a timber merchant. Robert and Claude lived in Heber Terrace (I live in Cornwall and know nothing about the area, so not sure where that is)

RYALLS (Lyalls) My great-grandmother was Mary Jane. On my grandmother's birth cert she is listed as formerly "Lyle". She is on the 1871 census as married to Richard Ives, with nephew Henry Ledger living with them. His father Sollitt is also present. I have found a marriage of Sollitt Ledger and Anne Elizabeth Ryalls. In 1861 she was living with father Reuben, mother Sarah and siblings, including Mary Jane. (right birth date and place). I would love to hear from anyone who has an info on this family.

CHARLESWORTH/BONNETT FAMILY. Has anyone any info leading to my Grandfathers family. My Gt.Grandmother died @ Highfields Farm, Reedness 13/12/1926, her first husband was George Bonnet from Lincoln, she had 3 children to him. She met Thomas Glew Charlesforth from Sheffield working for Joseph Temperton @ West Butterwick as a farm servant 1881 census, has anyone any details on Joseph Temperton? No records they ever married. She had 3 children to Thomas. Jane is buried ' Whitgift Cemetery, Thomas is buried in Scunthorpe Cementery.

How interesting to have come upon this website.My Mothers family were the Amery,s and Broughton who used to live at RoseHill,Station Road,Rawcliffe Bridge,up to the 20s.i have several close relatives at Goole,and several more in Rawcliffe cemetery. I had a close relative George Broughton who was killed at the paper mill about 1914 when a boy turned on a machine while he was in it!My Grandfather died of gangrene in his finger at the mill as well in 1930.He had served in the KOYLIS from 1880 till just before Mother was born in 1903.He was in India,and both Boer wars.I cant locate his record. I see people mention the Gunn family.Mother told me their 2 boys were killed as stretcher bearers in WW1, one I think was called Ernie. My Mother was Lily Evelyn,her sister.Ivy,and Annie and Mary.The youngest boy George Broughton b 1915 was killed in the RAF in 1942,and is on the war memorial.If anyone is interested in this,pleased contact me if you wish David Harrison
